Gibbs and Sagna both doubts for Wembley

Arsène Wenger has injury concerns over his full backs for the FA Cup Semi-Final with Chelsea on Saturday.

The Arsenal manager is definitely without Gael Clichy (back) while Bacary Sagna is still a doubt after pulling out of the game with Villarreal on Wednesday night with a virus.

Kieran Gibbs picked a groin problem in that 3-0 victory so, with William Gallas (knee) and Johan Djourou (knee) certainly out, Wenger will have to shuffle his defence once more.

“We still have Sagna as a doubt for the weekend,” said the manager told Arsenal TV Online on Thursday afternoon.

“And after last night we have Kieran Gibbs as doubt too. He has a little groin problem. Clichy,  Almunia and Djourou are still out."

The major issue would appear to be at left back but Wenger believes he can find a solution.

‘There is the option to play Sagna in there if he has recovered," he said . "The other is to play Silvestre there and put Song at the back. There’s not many options but we’ll deal with the situation no matter what happens."

However, further forward on the pitch there was better news.

“Of course we gain Arshavin back because he can play in the FA Cup,” said Wenger. “Eduardo and Diaby are available for selection as well.

“Eduardo might be a little bit short but Diaby is completely ready.”

Given the number of big games coming up in the near future it would be no surprise if both were used as Wenger rotates his squad. But, with a little time on his side, the 59-year-old is happy to bide his time over the changes he makes.

“Frankly I don’t know about that yet,” he said. “I am happy to take 48 hours more so I can assess tomorrow’s [injury] situation. Also it means I can look back at how I rotated before and as well, how we can keep the balance right considering the opponent.

“We have to rotate a little bit because we play every three days now and only the squad can achieve what we want to achieve.”

For the record, the manager estimated that Almunia (ankle), Djourou (knee) were a fortnight away while Clichy (back) is in the middle of a two-and-a-half week period of rest. Only then will the Frenchman start his rehab in earnest.

Newcastle striker Mark Viduka could return from injury for Sunday's match against Tottenham to aid the club's relegation battle.

The 33-year-old Australian has not played since Newcastle's loss at Bolton on 1 March because of a recurrence of a long-standing Achilles injury.

Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas is a major to doubt to face his former club with a hamstring injury.

Wilson Palacios is back from suspension though to bolster the Spurs midfield.

Newcastle manager Alan Shearer will be grateful for Viduka's return with the club lying just inside the Premier League relegation zone in 18th place, two points behind Sunderland in 17th.

"He's got a huge amount of talent and we believe if we can keep him fit, then he will play a big part in helping us," said Shearer.

United striker Obafemi Martins remains a doubt for the match at White Hart Lane with a groin problem, while full-back Jose Enrique is struggling with a knee injury which kept him out of last Saturday's 1-1 draw at Stoke.

Jenas picked up his injury during Spurs' 1-0 win over West Ham last Saturday.

In such circumstances Palacios's return - after a one-game suspension for his sending off at Blackburn - could not be more timely for Spurs.

Man City owners to give Hughes another season

Manchester City's manager Mark Hughes has been told he will not be sacked in the summer, despite being knocked out of the UEFA Cup on Thursday night.

Speculation was rife that the City manager would be removed at the end of the current campaign after a disappointing season, but chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has told Hughes he will be given another season to prove his worth at Eastlands.

City's last chance for silverware this season ended when, despite beating Hamburg 2-1 on the night, the German Bundesliga side progressed to the UEFA Cup semi-finals beating a spirited City 4-3 on aggregate.

Hamburg extended their aggregate lead in the quarter-final to 4-1 through Paolo Guerrero after just 11 minutes. However City battled back and goals from Elano (penalty) and Felipe Caicedo in the 16th and 50th minutes gave them hope.

At full-time Al Mubarak led the applause, clearly impressed with the effort Hughes managed to extract from his players.

Ahead of the game Hughes held talks with Al Mubarak to discuss the club's future, during which the manager was told he would be given more time to deliver success to the club which was sensationally bought last year by the Abu Dhabi United Group.

In the months since the takeover last August, Hughes has had much to contend with from trying to manage the talented but temperamental £32m-signing Robinho to the month-long speculation surrounding the failed transfer bid for Kaka.

While no specific timeframe was given to Hughes, it is understood that Abu Dhabi United Group will expect a dramatic improvement in the club's fortunes next season.

The Daily Telegraph report that during the meeting Hughes was asked which players he deemed surplus to requirements, a list believed to include Elano, Benjani Mwaruwari and Darius Vassell.

The club's owners have been largely impressed with Hughes success in the transfer market buying more functional players, however they are expected to press ahead with the plans to sign marquee name players this summer; Thierry Henry and Franck Ribery are thought to be top of their list.

Speaking after the game against Hamburg Hughes said of his earlier meeting with Al Mubarak: ''It was fine, I am still here. It was big night for everyone at the club for obvious reasons. We needed to make a statement and I think we did that with the level of our performance.

''It was important we came out and showed people there are things happening here and we have ability.

''When in the future we are able to produce it on a regular basis we will be a very difficult side to overcome. It is the beginning of long journey.''

Hughes was proud of his players' performance, saying: ''It was a really poor start but we did not let that affect us. We picked ourselves up and got back on level terms very quickly.

''There was a real sense that we were trying to make something special happen and we almost achieved that goal. But unfortunately we did not get that break when we needed it.''

Hamburg coach Martin Jol was delighted to clinch a semi-final against Bundesliga rivals Werder Bremen.

''We started off very well and the goal helped a lot,'' said the former Tottenham Hotspur boss. ''Then we had a penalty given against us, which was a bit harsh.

''We knew if they got another goal it would be exciting again and that is what happened. But they did not score a third and that was great. I think over two legs we were the better side.''
